Lees-McRae College and the May School of Nursing and Health Sciences in Banner Elk, North Carolina -
Academic partner and home site for Faith Community Nurses International
Lees-McRae College has faith-based origins dating back to 1895, when Union Theological Seminary student Edgar Tufts was sent to Banner Elk to organize a church. Following ordination in 1897, Rev. Tufts returned to the area as the pastor of Banner Elk Presbyterian Church. Several years later, Tufts developed a small study group of neighborhood young people, recognized as the Class of 1900. This marks the beginning of Lees-McRae College. The college is named for two of the initial instrumental leaders—Mrs. Elizabeth A. McRae, a devoted teacher, and Mrs. Susanna P. Lees, a vital benefactor.
