Evidence-Based Practice and the FCN

EBP and the FCN

As Faith Community Nurses, our practice is a beautiful blend of nursing science and spiritual care that serves to provide wholistic health and intentional care of the spirit.  Do you wonder where the evidence comes from to enable us to do this?  Do you long to improve your practice in this specialty area and become more proficient in implementing evidence-based care?

The Westberg Institute for Faith Community Nursing recently requested the development of a position statement in support of Evidence-Based Practice (EBP), stating that “the faith community nurse (FCN) supports, applies, and engages in Evidence-Based Practice” (Knighten, 2019).  The position statement, along with an article regarding the role of the FCN in EBP was published in the Winter 2020 issue of Perspectives. The position statement can also be found on the Westberg Institute Yammer platform at https://www.yammer.com/westberginstituteforfaithcommunitynursing/#/files/339792109568

EBP for faith community nursing is growing as more research is conducted in the specialty, however much of the “evidence” comes from practice, quality improvement studies, patient narratives, and nursing case studies.  FCNs may also tap into evidence from other disciplines, such as medicine, community health, nutrition, chaplaincy, pastoral care, and theology.  Standard 13 of the Faith Community Nursing Scope and Standards of Practice states that the FCN integrates evidence and research into practice (ANA & HMA, 2017, p.74); EBP is integrated in most, if not all, of the practice provisions.

FCNI has an active Research Committee, with notable researchers in the specialty who participate in both the committee meetings and an optional Research Support Zoom Hour that follows the Research Committee Meeting every first Friday at 12N CT upon request.  A new Practice Committee has been launched to support FCN practice and facilitate faith community nursing research being translated into practice.  The Practice Committee will meet on the first Friday of the month at 8am PST, 10am CT, or 11am ET.  Please contact me if you would like to join us!

Finally, if you want to learn more about EBP and your role as a FCN, come to the Westberg Symposium April 20-22, where I will be offering a 90-minute workshop on how to implement EBP in your practice as an FCN.  FCNI is offering a pre-conference research forum on April 19th with a research and practice focused session for the Susan B. Mills Memorial Translational Research Session.  Learn about EBP and take your practice to the next level!
