“Soul Care: Faith-Based Self Care Practices for Healthcare Professionals”

Presented by: Samuel Girguis, PsyD, and Amy Girguis, MSN

Description: This session will explore the impact of stress, chronic stress, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress on healthcare providers. Participants will learn how to recognize signs of stress in their own lives and learn practical ways to mitigate stress and prevent burnout. 

Bios: Dr Samuel Girguis is a licensed psychologist who specializes in child/adolescent trauma and resilience. He is currently the Director of the Doctor of Psychology program at Azusa Pacific University (APU). Prior to APU, Dr Girguis worked with children and adolescents impacted by trauma at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Dr Girguis has conducted research/training in Cambodia, the Philippines, and Lebanon. His work in Cambodia and the Philippines focused on culturally-based trauma treatment for youth who have experienced trafficking or sexual exploitation. His work in Lebanon focused on supporting Lebanese aid workers who were caring for refugees from Syria.

Amy Girguis is an RN and an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant with a MSN focused in nursing education. She has worked at Children's Hospital Los Angeles for over 20 years, starting as a bedside nurse on a pediatric med-surg unit. She spent several years in a leadership position before transitioning to her current role as a Lactation Consultant working with parents of critically ill and hospitalized infants. She also is an adjunct professor at APU teaching pediatric nursing. Ms Girguis has also volunteered in healthcare settings in India and Kenya. 

Learning outcomes:

1.     Define terms for self care such as stress, burnout, and trauma including cultural considerations.

2.   Identify 3 self-care practices to utilize in one’s own practice.

Approval Statement: This nursing continuing professional development activity was approved by the Northeast Multistate Division Education Unit, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Learner Outcomes: Upon completion, the learner will be able to:

1.        Define terms for self care such as stress, burnout, and trauma including cultural considerations.

2.        Identify 3 self-care practices to utilize in one’s own practice.

Criteria for successful completion: The participant must attend all of the activity and complete the self-evaluation and post-test at 75%.
